Lagana, Swain, & Tully join Gov Murphy in Bergen County to Fight Back Against NY Congestion Pricing

Bergen County, NJ – Today, Senator Joseph Lagana (D-Paramus), Assemblymember Lisa Swain (D-Fair Lawn), and Assemblymember Chris Tully (D-Bergenfield) joined Governor Phil Murphy in Bergen County for the signing of Senate Bill 3128 and the announcement of a lawsuit to fight back against New York’s congestion pricing scheme.

“New Jersey taxpayers who work for a New York City company are subjected to unfair double taxation by New York – this bill evens the playing field,” said Senator Lagana. “We’re also creating incentives for New York businesses to open offices in New Jersey closer to the families that make up their workforces.

Murphy signed the bipartisan legislation, led by Senator Lagana and sponsored by Assemblymembers Swain and Tully, which will even the income tax disparity between New York and New Jersey, helping New Jersey taxpayers fight back against New York’s double taxation.

“Hard-working New Jersey commuters who cross state lines to provide for their families will soon be targeted by exorbitant congestion fees that drain their hard-earned income and flow entirely into the economy of another state,” said Assemblywoman Tully. “We cannot afford to have our residents pick up the tabs for New York’s failure to invest in their infrastructure.”

New York’s planned congestion pricing would cost Bergen County commuters up to $23 per trip into New York City, raising costs for residents.

“This is an issue that is going to cost everyone money, whether it’s the commuters who are now driving into the city and paying all that money or it’s my constituents in Bergen County who are going to be punished by the additional pollution,” said Assemblyman Swain. “We are fighting for everyone in New Jersey, and we won’t back down.”
