PRESS RELEASE

Lagana, Swain and Tully Celebrate Labor Day

Bergen County, NJ – Senator Joseph Lagana (D-Paramus), Assemblywoman Lisa Swain (D-Fair Lawn), and Assemblyman Chris Tully (D-Bergenfield) are pleased to celebrate Labor Day and recognize New Jersey’s contributions to the labor movement in the United States.

“I’m proud to be a champion for workers and organized labor in New Jersey,” said Senator Lagana, Vice-Chair of the Senate Labor Committee. “In the Senate, I’ve advanced legislation to protect collective bargaining rights, honor our retirement commitments to workers, and improve pay and working conditions across the state.”

Without labor unions, we wouldn't have the eight-hour workday, weekends off, lunch breaks, paid vacation, Social Security, or the minimum wage. Lagana, Swain, and Tully believe that it is essential that we fight for labor unions so that they can continue the fight for working people in New Jersey and across the country.

“I’m proud to be a pro-labor legislator – I’m committed to defending the right to organize and bargain for better pay, benefits, and working conditions,” said Assemblywoman Swain. “We have a labor shortage in New Jersey, and it’s clear to me that to recruit and retain workers, we must protect their rights and fight for their interests to make New Jersey the best place to live and work.”

New Jersey has a rich and long history in the struggle to advance workers' rights. From Peter J. McGuire – the ‘Father of Labor Day’ and a New Jersey resident – to Christian Smalls – the founder of the Amazon Labor Union who was raised right here in Bergen County – New Jersey’s contributions to the movement have been pivotal.

“I’m proud to stand with the millions of New Jerseyans whose hard work laid the groundwork for our great state,” said Assemblyman Tully. “Our state’s workers are the best in the country. I will continue to fight for them in the state legislature, including by investing in our infrastructure, strengthening our labor laws, and bringing more investment to New Jersey.”
