Senator Lagana Successfully Fights to Lower Crime in Bergen County

Bergen County, NJ – Senator Joseph Lagana (D-Paramus) wrote and helped to pass a series of bills this year which will reduce the threat of auto theft in Bergen County and help keep every New Jerseyan safe from fentanyl.

“My constituents have told me loud and clear that they want Bergen County to become a safer place to live, work and raise a family,” said Senator Lagana. “This year I was proud to deliver for them by passing a series of laws which will decrease auto theft and we’re working to get fentanyl off our streets, making all of us in New Jersey safer from crime.”

Responding to the rise in auto theft in New Jersey, Senator Lagana, Assemblyman Chris Tully, and Assemblywoman Lisa Swain passed legislation that will increase penalties for repeat car theft offenders. The law will also tackle the issue of burglary, reducing the ability of individuals to take key fobs from homes in order to steal cars.

“Bergen County commuters and families rely on their cars every day to get to work, school, and social activities,” said Senator Lagana. “I was proud to write and pass this law so my constituents don’t have to worry if their car will be available the next time they need it.”

Senator Lagana also successfully fought for the passage of legislation in the Senate to take fentanyl off the streets of New Jersey. By increasing penalties on those who smuggle massive amounts of fentanyl through New Jersey’s ports, Lagana’s legislation would keep Bergen County residents safer from this dangerous drug. The bill is now with the Assembly for consideration.

“Too many of my constituents have told me a heartbreaking story about losing a loved one to the fentanyl crisis,” said Senator Lagana. “My bill will reduce the amount of fentanyl on our streets by stopping more large-scale dealers from getting the deadly drug into New Jersey.”
